A POOR MAN’S TAJ MAHAL

A retired postmaster, Saidul Hasan Qadri, build a Taj Mahal, like Mughal emperor Shah Jahan, to celebrate the memory of his beloved.

ik shahanshaah ne banwaa ke haseen Taajmahal, saari duniyaa ko muhabbat ki nishaani di hai,

iske saaye mein sadaa pyaar ke charche honge, khatm jo ho naa sakegi wo kahaani di hai–Shakeel Badayuni

[An emperor by making the beautiful Taj Mahal, has given the entire world a symbol of love. In its shadow, tales of love stories will told and heard,

He has given a (love) story that can never end.]

A retired postmaster, Saidul Hasan Qadri of Dibai in Bulandshahr district of Uttar Pradesh lost his wife, Tajammuli Begum, soon after he turned 78 in the year 2011.

He decided to celebrate the memory of his beloved by building a Taj Mahal like Mughal emperor Shah Jahan. To do so he committed his lifelong savings of a million rupees. The savings dried before his Taj Mahal could be completed. Akhilesh Yadav, the then chief minister, offered to help, put money in, but he politely declined. His Taj Mahal didn’t have a marble façade, and could never be completed. When he died, a few years later, like Shah Jahan, was buried alongside his beloved.

Ek shahanshah ne daulat ka sahara le kar, Hum gareebon ki muhabbat ka udaya hai mazaaq–Sahir Ludhianvi.
